The waters surrounding Chincoteague Island are heating up. From Queen Sound to the Chincoteague Channel, in front of Capt.Bob’s Marina, flounder are showing up and we’re seeing more action now. Pictured is local, Danny Fox, of Chincoteague Island with a nice 18” Flounder. Most popular baits for the flounder are minnows paired with Gulp - chartreuse swimming mullet and silversides and squid. But adding to the excitement is Striper (aka RockFish ), they are still going strong AND the best part is as of May 16th the season opened. So put those fighters in your cooler making sure they are regulation size (for the seaside 28”-36”, 1 fish per person). Be sure you have clams, peelers, shrimp or bunker to tease their appetites. Assateague Channel is still producing flounder, although its a little overfished right now with two flounder tournaments that have occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Kingfish/whiting and small Croaker/hardhead are beginning to filter around Buoys 11 through Buoy 14. Best baits for these panfish is Gulp bloodworms which look identical to live bloods or FishBites artificial bloodworms. Both of these fake baits are great but anglers report the GULP out fishes the Fishbites. Remember there is a bag limit on croaker of 50 per person. On the Surf/Beach at Assateague Island the Black Drum still being caught, and Striper as well as the occasional shark. Baits to have along clams, sand fleas, bunker and mackerel. On the crabbing scene you can treat your palette to the best of both worlds of crabs. This is the shedding season so if you are hand lining and lucky - you could find a “Jimmy “ hovering over” a molting/shedding crab and scoop up both. Nothing better than a soft shell crab sandwich. Plus the Jimmy goes in the steamer. Crabs are always a fun family event and tasty too. That’s a wrap for this week. Come down and see our new fishing/crabbing apparel- refresh your wardrobe.
