It is the angler's responsibility to know and abide by all current regulations and laws. Individuals must obtain a saltwater recreational fishing license which entitles them to use rod and reel (hook & line), hand line, cast net, dip net or two crab pots. Virginia's Fisherman Identification Program (FIP)

VIRGINIA SALTWATER FISHING LICENSE REQUIRED (anglers between the ages of 16 and 65)
VIRGINIA FISHERMAN IDENTIFICATION PROGRAM (FIP) NUMBER REQUIRED (16 yrs & older)
The Virginia FIP is a state required program to register saltwater anglers & their catches EVERY YEAR without charge. Anglers may register online or by calling toll-free 1-800-723-2728, 24/7. Registration is quick, easy and FREE.

National Saltwater Angler Registry - if you have a Virginia FIP or a Maryland equivalent, you are exempt from purchasing the National Saltwater Angler Registry unless you fish federal waters, then you must obtain one.

The National Saltwater Angler Registry is the law. It is also an important tool to account for fishermen and their catch. Become part of a network of fishermen helping to conserve our oceans and ensure the future of recreational fishing. By registering, you help NOAA make your catch count.

As of January 1, 2011, if you have a saltwater recreational fishing license or registration from any state or U.S. territory EXCEPT Hawaii, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands, you are AUTOMATICALLY registered and do not need to take further action. Please be sure to follow all laws and regulations in the waters in which you are fishing. The fee is $15.00.
